Soursop

🌿 Soursop

Graviola
Annona muricata
Graviola, also known as soursop or guanabana, is an evergreen tropical tree belonging to the Annonaceae family. Its large, spiny fruits are widely consumed as food and in beverages in tropical regions. The leaves, bark, seeds and fruit have traditionally been used in South American, Caribbean, African and Southeast Asian medicine for fever, digestive complaints, diarrhoea, parasites, inflammation, rheumatic complaints and asthma.

Scientific research has focused particularly on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and potentially antidiabetic properties. The annonaceous acetogenins found in the plant have attracted considerable attention because laboratory studies have demonstrated cytotoxic effects against various cancer cell lines.

Notes

Graviola may also lower blood glucose and blood pressure, potentially enhancing the effects of corresponding medications. People taking such medicines should therefore discuss its use with a healthcare professional. The quality and composition of commercially available graviola products can also vary considerably.
