Ginkgo

🌿 Ginkgo

Ginkgo
Ginkgo biloba L.
Ginkgo is an exceptionally ancient tree, with Ginkgo biloba being the only surviving species of the Ginkgoaceae family. Medicinally, the leaves are mainly used, particularly standardised dry extracts. Characteristic constituents include flavonoid glycosides, terpene lactones such as ginkgolides and bilobalide, and other phenolic compounds.

Ginkgo is traditionally and medicinally used mainly to support cognitive function and in mild dementia-related cognitive impairment, as well as for minor peripheral circulatory disorders. The EMA recognises standardised ginkgo leaf extracts for the symptomatic treatment of age-related cognitive impairment in adults with mild dementia as well-established use. The use for minor circulation problems is based on traditional use.

Notes

Ginkgo is particularly known for its potential effects on cerebral and peripheral circulation. Possible mechanisms include effects on blood flow, antioxidant activity and protection of nerve cells against oxidative stress. Its exact mechanism in cognitive disorders, however, is not fully understood.

Certain standardised ginkgo extracts may improve cognitive function and quality of life in mild dementia. Ginkgo has not, however, convincingly been shown to prevent dementia or slow its progression in healthy people or those with mild cognitive impairment.
